Born in an oven™
From a tender age, Delcie’s passion for confectionery artistry was ignited when she won a cake mixer from a lucky draw. Since then, Delcie became obsessed with baking and often experimented concocting cake recipes in the kitchen and gave them away to her friends and family until her dad commented to her when she was 13 that she should stop giving cakes away for free and start selling them instead. This idea was rekindled when she took a sabbatical from her art director job in DDB Singapore.
Emerging as the top student from Raffles Design Institute’s Visual Communication course in 2006, she thrilled many with her charming and intricate graphic designs and became known as Noise Top 20 Local Designer in 2006. Delcie’s unmistakable artistic talents were noticed and she quickly became an art director in Doyle Dane and Bernbach (DDB) Singapore. As she was dedicated to her art director job, Delcie hardly found time to bake. However her boyfriend and eventually husband, encouraged her to follow her heart and share her love for cakes with others. She quit her design job in September 2008 to pursue her childhood desire – baking.
However, her mother strongly opposed the idea of giving up her design job to start a business and both parents declined to support her financially. Determined to prove that she would be a success, Delcie worked hard in the business, and invested her life savings, and had to continuously worry about paying rent, Delcie then embarked on a 3 months action plan.
She started business with just one oven, a cake mixer and co-sharing space in a bubble tea stall at Bishan .
As Delcie has a sweet tooth, she knew that she would put on weight if she started her bakery as she would need to test how they taste after baking them , and thus decided to bake healthy cakes instead. Under the tutelage of her mother, she started using organic ingredients and made all her recipes low in fat and sugar.
Since then, she hasn’t turned back and used her baking techniques to create fine works of art. As a testament to her great skill, Delcie had won the first prize in Prima Deli’s Horoscope Cake Design Competition and her cake designs were sold in all Prima Deli’s retail outlets in 2005.
However operating a business was not as simple as being an employee, her mother was right and she had to work 12 hours in the stall, managing cash flow by diversifying into selling bubble tea, sandwiches and hotdogs to cater for the school crowd in order to earn more money to pay the rent.
Despite her effort, the business was still running in a deficit. It did not help when her mother’s health deteriorated and passed away on 31st March 2009.
When Delcie’s bakes, it becomes healthy.™
Ever since her mother passed away due to stomach and intestine cancer, Delcie became a passionate advocate for healthy eating, as she believes that “food can either be your medicine or poison.”
This is how Delcie returned into focusing on her business. Recalling her mission to create healthy cakes, she pioneered the technique in baking Guilt free Organic cakes without Eggs, Dairy, Gluten and replacing cane sugar with Low GI natural sweeteners, thus making her cakes diabetic Friendly as well.
Becoming egg and dairy free was not by chance, this was shaped by Delcie’s personal lifestyle and her responsibility towards her customers with allergies . Her husband first initiated to turn vegetarian (eggless) for religious reason and needed moral support from Delcie to encourage his diet. Followed by receiving a plea from a customer whose child has severe dairy allergies and wanted a cake for his birthday. This led Delcie to remove both eggs & dairy from her menu.
However, she found her decision challenging as there was no bakery around the region teaching such recipes. She started approaching professional pastry chefs but they declined to work with her as it was impossible for cakes to taste good without eggs and butter.
Delcie’s determined nature and belief that anything is possible, started testing her own recipes without eggs and dairy. With the help of customers’ feedback, she improvised and came up with her own version of healthy cakes.
Delcie had thrown away many unsuccessful cakes in her pursuit for the perfect healthy recipe to the point that she even cried to herself while baking, Delcie didn’t take failure too well in the beginning and felt pain with each unsuccessful attempt of making the perfect healthy cake. She even resorted to hiding in the kitchen for a good 6 months, in fear of facing disgruntled customers.
However, Delcie’s hardwork has finally paid off. She has found the perfect balance between healthy and rich. Her cakes have gotten testimonials from many satisfied customers who have eaten her healthy guilt free cakes which taste just as nice as the traditional sugar laden ones, but without the guilt that comes with it.
